U.S. - International Keyboard

These procedures for installing and using refer to Win95/98/ME (note that Win3.0/3.1 also has an international keyboard layout but I no longer have WIN3.1 so I can't describe installation and usage). I currently am using Win XP Pro.

To install the US-International keyboard: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Keyboard, Add, select English, use the down arrow next to English, select US, use the down arrow next to US, select US-International, apply/OK your way out!

After installation, to get the special character, hold down the AltChar key (right hand Alt key) and press the desired character key.

Note: After the US-International Keyboard is activated, I have experienced a "quirk" regarding the single and double quote marks: after pressing a quote key, it is sometimes necessary to type a following letter or space for the quote to appear and the quote marks often act as the AltChar key! A little bit of practice and checking the text on the screen will assist you a great deal. Touch typists beware!
