Barroso, Abelardo y La Orquesta Sensación | Bruca Manigua If you have any corrections or comments regarding the styles, the recording date(s) of the tunes, the musicians, etc., please let me know. The CD is "Bruca Manigu con Abelardo Barroso y La Orquesta Sensación", one of the best charanga bands; according to some of my notes, Barroso was over 60 years old at the time of the recording; Orq Sensación is quite mellow but if you listen, they have a lot of drive; good flute solos (Pablo ?), great use of violins, bass booms a bit; excelent vocals including good vocal harmony even with the one strong fañoso style ("Bruca Manigua") but I don't hear the fañoso as strongly on the remainder of the tunes; all tunes are under 3 minutes; musicians may include (from another CD because this CD does not list the musicians) Rolando Valds, Director, guiro y coro; Abelardo Barroso, Cantante; Juan Pablo Miranda, Flauta; Ovidio Prez Pinto Y Lauri, Violines; Jess Esquizarrosa, Timbal; Carlos Zulueta, Piano; Miguel Santacruz "El Piche", Tumbadora; Ta-Benito, Coro; Luis Donald, Coro; Eddy Alvarez, Coro; Alejandro "El Negro" Vivar, Trompeta; Enemelio Jimnez, Saxo alto; Generoso "El Tojo" Jimnez, Trombon: "Bruca Manigu" (Afro-Cha) a classic tune by Arsenio Rodriguez, and one of my all time favorites and my favorite cut on the CD, very interesting horn solos showing the some U.S. pop/jazz influences on Cuban music. "El Cangrejito" (cha-cha-ch) nice danzon intro. "San Luisera" (son montuno). "El Fantasma Del Circo" (cha-cha-ch). "Guajiras De Hoy" (guajira) reminds me why I have always liked guajiras; tasty and simple timbale break licks; is that a Joropo ending? "La Mulata Chanela" (cha-cha-ch) interesting simple straight electric guitar intro and solo; has bongos which I have not heard on many chachachs. "Sauvecito" (cha-cha-ch) pretty straight, nothing really fancy; I don't hear a tell tale chachach piano pattern on most of the tune, are the violins playing the pattern? "Changui Monte" (son montuno) one of my favorite cuts on the CD; nice violin solo; one very tasty timbale lick; the tune drives but it just fades at the end, I wish they had let it go on, I wonder what else was there! "Los Tamalitos de Olga" (cha-cha-ch) again I don't hear the tell tale piano chachach pattern? "Vacila Con Tu Trago" (cha-cha-ch) seems to have a strong old style bolero section. "Resabroso Cha-Cha-Cha" (cha-cha-ch) at last, a clear chachacha piano pattern. "Lo Que La Vida Ensea" (guajira) is that bolero in the various vocal sections? |

Note 2: Orq Fajardo - with Orq Aragon considered the #1 band of its type in Cuba. 12 men in group - piano, bbass, conga, timbales, flute, 4 violins, 3 singers who also play rhythm instruments such as maracas, guiro, etc. Tata Gines plays conga with this group. Jose Fajardo plays flute. Note 3: Descarga - a copy of Orq Melodias del 40. Charlie Palmieri, pianist, born and bred in N.Y., organized this group - first of its kind by Americans - not imported. Note 4: Orq Aragon - best Orquesta Tipica or "Charanga"group in Cuba. "Pare Cochero" - the tune that brought Aragon into fame. Recorded between 1945 and 1948. Note 5: Orq Sensacion - singer is Abalardo Barroso - old, over 60, well known in 1920's as singer - now with Sensacion. Note 6: Belisario Lopez Group - 1945 - 1950. Note roughness in sound as compared to Aragon or Fajardo. This was a transition from the sound of Orq Melodias del 40 (most popular in the 1940-46 era) to the Aragon type. |
